Has Assistant Manager Langston discovered the key to turning around the hulls season, worked out the meaning of life, given hullers everywhere a reason to live? Well from Monyhull Church’s point of view, no, the bible is quite clear that salvation is by grace alone, by faith alone, by christ alone and by scripture alone, but not by works (anyone wanting to know why those statements are not contradictory please ask Vince when he picks Andy up on Thursday). However, from the point of view of a bunch of slightly overweight men who think that it is only bad luck that has prevented them being signed up by a premier league club, or even Charlton, then possibly. And this elixir of life, well, listen carefully…..
I seem to recall that in what could be described as an inspirational team talk on Saturday morning I gave a few simple instructions.
1. from kick offs I wanted the ball played straight out to the wings to put the opposition under pressure rather than ourselves by passing it further backward until we lost possession
2.Any free kicks in shooting range were to be takenby Jamie because Kieran always pulls them going for too much power
What happened in the game? No kickoffs (and we had a good few) went out to the wings, Kieran sent one free kick miles wide and one straight to the keeper.
So, the usual Hull warcry of “theres no one talking” now seems pointless because we know that theres no one listening either.
Except that the post match grapevine says that some people were listening to something other than me and were fed up of being critisised. Believed to be upset were the tackling full back, but as he was also heard to tell a number of his team mates to f off managerial sympathy is a little low. My personal opinion is that a bit of critisism is good to keep us on our toes, and having been on the receiving end of some from Dan and Key on Saturday in both cases it was fair enough, and anyway, I can have thelast word here.
Lets be honest, none of us are all that good, I don’t think anyone expects me to beat 4 players and then curl the ball into the top corner, but if anyone sees me pull out of a tackle, or not challenge for a header then they should have a word, and while Key is unfortunate enough to look a bit like Paul Scholes, none of us expect himto have the same skills. There isn’t much of a point to that, I just wanted to gratuitously insult him.
So, lets listen to instructions and take a bit of critisism as a spur to put more effort in from people who just want to win the odd game. Anyway, on to Saturdays game.
